My History My Now

by Chloe Burke

Did you know that the timeline for Gypsies/Roma/Travellers can be sourced from the time 53 B.C.E. That was a very long time ago! That was the time of the post roman invasion, there were fairs being held in the United Kingdom. G/R/T’s have been around for a very long time, you can find a timeline that has been sourced on the Gypsy Roma traveller history month website (www.GRTHM.co.uk). This timeline takes you back to 53 BCE all the way up to the 2000’s. This timeline includes some interesting evidence about my cultures history that includes Christopher Columbus making his voyage to the new world with four Gypsies in 1498 and Appleby fair being granted chartered fair status by King James II in 1685.

My name is Chloe Burke and I love history, I decided to do some of my own research on my culture comparing to how it was back in the day to how it is now by asking my mammy some questions about what life was like for her growing up being part of the G/R/T community.

Interview with my mammy

Where did you stay growing up?

We lived in a lot of places and stayed in trailers, tents and houses depending on where we went.  it was mostly trailers we lived in if we were shifting

what did you do for jobs?

I worked on a farm picking berries and picking tatties which were seasonal work, I also went out hawking the doors. There were also times where we would knock on doors of houses if we needed clothes, towels and food if could not get out to work and needed them things.

How was going to school like back then?

Going to school was hard, we used to shift a lot so went to different schools all the time and I did get bullied a lot in school for being a gypsy.

What did you used to do when you were bored?

We used to play a lot of card games, one of them that we all played a lot was a card game called Bella.

The card game Bella’s original name is called Belote and has been played in various countries for a long time! Here is a YT video explaining the card game if you would like to learn more!

I can see some similarities to my personal experience growing up being a part of the G/R/T community to my mother’s but also differences as well. For instance, I also stayed in trailers, especially when we were shifting which was mostly spring summer time and we would always shift in a trailer. I always loved being out shifting some of the memories I have being out in the trailer were being out in a camp that was a field somewhere in Aberdeenshire, I made friends with this other lassie in the camp and we use to go out playing and build dens. Another memory I have is that we shifted to a camp that was on a beach and I made friends with this girl and her brother, we loved going to the beach and collecting the crabs and then scare her little brother with them! I spent most of the days outside playing in the camps and making new friends. I was fortunate enough to not experience a lot of racism and discrimination growing up personally but I do recognise and know of others who have unfortunately have had them negative experiences and got bullied for being a traveller.

I don’t really understand why people in my community are treated differently because of who we are. We have cultural differences and different lifestyle choices (such as shifting out in the trailer) but that doesn’t take away the fact we are still people. My hope for my culture’s future is for us to be more appreciated and accepted in the wider community and to be able to have more opportunities in education and work experience that is tailored to culture needs.
