Norton Park Conference Centre

Wednesday 7 June, 10am to 3pm

MECOPP will be hosting an event as part of Carers’ Week at Norton Park Conference Centre between 10am and 3pm. Carers supported by MECOPP, as well as those who would like to find out more, are invited to along to an event that will include a clothes swap shop, delicious mocktails, and complimentary therapies. As Carers’ Week coincides with GRTHM, this event will feature some of the Moving Minds storyboards, which share and celebrate the stories, culture and heritage of Gypsy/Traveller carers from across Scotland. Event open to all minority ethnic carers.

Auchindrain

Saturday 10 June and Sunday 11 June from 11am

During the event, the museum’s annual bow camp will be built, furnished and open to the public. Traditional Traveller skills will be demonstrated and an exhibition of Travellers’ lives and stories, MECOPP’s Moving Minds, will be on display.

Craigmillar Now

Wednesday 14 June, 11am to 3pm

MECOPP and Craigmillar Now will be running a special community archive event Wednesday 14 June between 11am and 3pm. Gypsy/Travellers with links to Craigmillar are invited to bring along family photos and memories of the area. Those attending will be shown how to digitise their photographs and will get a digital copy of their photo collection to take home. They will also be given the opportunity to deposit a copy with the archive at Craigmillar Now where it will help them build on their community archive of the area. This will be a relaxed event with plenty of cups of tea and biscuits, and a chance to share memories and stories of the area.

Stirling Smith Museum

Saturday 17 June, from 11am to 4pm

MECOPP and the Stirling Smith will be running an event at the Stirling Smith Museum, Saturday 17 June, 12 noon till 5pm. A pop-up exhibition in the lecture theatre will include a selection from the Moving Minds display. There will also be a chance to see some relevant collections, go on a guided tour of the town, which will focus on a Gypsy/Traveller family from the town who had links with the museum, and learn how to make paper flowers. The paper flower demonstration/activity will be run by Kathy Townsley McGuigan. Short films and music related to Gypsy/Traveller heritage and culture will also be played in the lecture theatre. Open to all.

Civic Hall, Perth

Monday 19th & Tuesday 20th, 9.30am-5pm

This exhibition will be shown in the Civic Hall in Perth on Monday 19 and Tuesday 20 June between 9.30am and 5pm.

Accompanying the exhibition on Monday 19 June, Mangin Manashees will deliver a flower-making session from 11am – 3pm. On Tuesday 20 June, Shamus McPhee, creator of the exhibition, will be in the exhibition space to talk with visitors.

The Hub at Oban High School

Monday 19 June to Wednesday 21 June

MECOPP and STEP are holding events at Oban High School. Coinciding with the Transition days, which brings P7 pupils up to the High School before the summer, a selection of story boards and object boards from the Moving Minds exhibition will be on display in The Hub at Oban High School. The selected boards will focus on things chosen by young people and stories linked to Argyll. Storyteller Jimmy Williamson will attend during the exhibition to tell stories to the pupils visiting. During June, STEP will also be promoting its Journeys art project and inviting pupils from the High School and across its feeder primary schools to submit artworks to their online exhibition.

Wednesday 21 June

On Wednesday 21 June, Mangin Manashees and local historian Dr Nicola Small will hold a walking tour around Perth, reminiscing about places of culture, heritage and areas of historical importance. For more information email, equalities@pkc.gov.uk.

Thursday 22 June

The Race Equality Team at the Scottish Government is delighted to invite community members, stakeholders, elected representatives, and members of the public to this special event on the occasion of the Gypsy, Roma and Traveller (GRT) History Month 2023. This is an informal 'come as you please' event aiming to celebrate and recognise the work of Gypsy/Traveller and Roma communities and national and local partners. This year, the event will focus on how we tackle discrimination against Gypsy/Traveller and Roma communities. It will also be a chance to come together to collectively stand against racism and prejudice, showing solidarity with the diverse Gypsy/Traveller and Roma communities we are lucky to have in Scotland.
